The resources include a short, easy to read, printed guide for workers about supporting women with disabilities who are experiencing family violence, as well as a new webpage for women with disabilities about how to identify the warning signs of abuse, the importance of telling someone, and stories of women's experiences.

STOP PRESS

We Have Changed Our Name

Our service has changed its name from the Domestic Violence and Incest Resource Centre to the Domestic Violence Resource Centre Victoria. We have long had debates about labelling and language. You may remember that the first DVRC discussion paper was called What's in a Name? Definitions and Domestic Violence. There are many meanings and implications attached to whatever name is applied to either a social problem or an organisation. Each word of our name has its protagonists and its antagonists, even a word like Centre. Finally we opted for the least change in a time when so much else seemed to be on the move. The word incest was being blocked by content filters on computers, preventing people's access to our websites. Besides that, incest is a term rarely used now and the current preferred term is child sexual abuse.

Our new domain name is dvrcv so our website is now: www.dvrcv.org.au and all our email addresses are now [insertname]@dvrcv.org.au. For example dvirc@dvirc.org.au is now dvrcv@dvrcv.org.au. Please update your records accordingly.

We will keep the dvirc domain for a while yet so all web and email traffic will be diverted to our new site and emails.

DVRCV LIBRARY NEWS

New Domestic Violence Guide and Brochure for Family and Friends

Family and Friends' Guide to Domestic Violence is a book that centres on the often under recognised role that family and friends can play in assisting a woman who is being abused. This book gives readers practical examples of how to help women who are in violent relationships and outlines what signs family and friends should pay attention to in order to recognise that abuse is occurring. There are clear guides provided on how to listen, respond to and take action in order to help a friend or family member.

To borrow this or any other item from the DVRCV library, ring to make an appointment with our librarian. Tel. (03) 9486 9866 or email library@dvrcv.org.au

Please note that one of DVRCV's most printed items is the brochure Is Someone You Know Being Abused in a Relationship? A Guide for Families, Friends & Neighbours. It is based on research about the importance of the support that women receive from their family, friends, and neighbours after domestic violence. You can order up to ten copies of this brochure from DVRCV free and the brochure is available in the following community languages: Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Russian, Serbian, Somali, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese.

Amnesty on Overdue Books

We are having an amnesty on overdue books while we automate our library and we are asking that any readers who have borrowed books or materials in the past to please return them so they can be added to our new catalogue, and so that others can borrow them. The automation of our catalogue and borrowing procedures will make it easier for people to utilise our extensive specialist library, which includes books, manuals, documents and DVDs.

Please return items to: Library, DVRCV, 292 Wellington Street, Collingwood VIC 3066. Thank you in anticipation.

DV SECTOR NEWS

Update on Accreditation for Family Violence Services

Family violence services are currently undertaking a self assessment of their policies, procedures, practices and programs as they engage in work toward achieving accreditation. Organisations funded by the Office of Housing to provide homelessness assistance, family violence and other case managed services are expected to undertake the accreditation process and to have achieved accreditation by the end of 2009. Organisations who have not been involved in any prior accreditation processes will be assessed against the Homelessness Assistance Service Standards (HASS) from DHS and Sections 1, 3.1 and 3.2 of the Organisation Management Standards from QICSA. QICSA (Quality Improvement and Community Services Accreditation) is the reviewing body for accreditation through DHS. Please contact Evie Soldatos at QICSA for further information about QICSA membership and the review process on email: E.Soldatos@latrobe.edu.au or mobile 0403 349 279.

Deb Western, Practice Development Manager at Domestic Violence Victoria, is available to work with organisations as they engage in the accreditation process; email debwestern@dvvic.org.au

Update on Victoria's New Family Violence Bill

April 2008 saw the long-awaited release of the second consultation draft of Victoria's new Family Violence Bill. A draft was released for public consultation in October 2007, and following on from the considerable feedback submitted to the Department of Justice a second draft of the legislation has been released for consultation prior to its introduction to Parliament later this year. The Victorian Family Violence Justice Reform Campaign prepared a submission to the Department of Justice and sent it in on 5 May. In the May State Budget, $1.5 million was committed to a community awareness campaign to support the introduction of the new Family Violence Bill.

For a copy of the draft Family Violence Bill 2008 please contact: Alison Macdonald, Policy Officer, Domestic Violence Victoria, Tel: (03) 9921 0820, or email: alisonmacdonald@dvvic.org.au
