ASSIST and Domestic Abuse Services, Community Safety | Glasgow
Mhairi McGowan is the Head of Service at ASSIST, Scotland’s first Independent Domestic Abuse Advocacy project which is co-located with Police Scotland. This project provides risk reduction interventions aimed at increasing the safety of victim/survivors and their children. ASSIST launched the first Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC) in Scotland in 2005 and is an active partner in Police Scotland’s MATAC (Multi Agency Tasking And Coordinating) process that targets serial and serious perpetrators.
Prof. Cathy Humphreys
Professor of Social Work, University of Melbourne
Cathy Humphreys is Professor of Social Work at University of Melbourne and one of Australia’s leading academics and authors on family violence and child safety. Cathy was previously a social work practitioner for 16 years and has now established a sustained program of research in the areas of domestic and family violence, out of home care and research utilisation.
FACT: In Australia, one woman is killed almost every week by a current or former intimate partner. In 2012/2013, 29 family violence-related murders occurred in Victoria, which account for a nearly half of all murders committed in the state. Intimate partner violence perpetrated by men is found to be the leading contributor to death, disability and illness for women in Victoria aged 15 to 44 years.
