Red Rose Rally to end family violence deaths

Red Rose Rally to end family violence deaths

Family violence prevention groups have staged a Red Rose Rally on the steps of State Parliament to urge the Baillieu Government to provide dedicated funding for Victoria’s Family Violence Death Review. Despite the contribution of the Review to vital preventative recommendations by coronial inquests and a nationally acknowledged role in preventing family violence deaths, a timeline prepared for the campaign shows that a financially strapped Coroners Court has had to fund the Review out of its general budget since July 2010, when dedicated funding lapsed. In February the State Coroner, Judge Jennifer Coate, suggested that the future of the Review could be in doubt without dedicated funding. The rally will lay red roses on the steps of State Parliament to represent the lives of women and children lost to family violence in Victoria. ‘Every year family violence costs Victoria at least $3.4 billion, and 27 family violence deaths cost $2 million each in addition to their incalculable human tragedy. ‘In contrast, the annual cost of funding the Family Violence Death Review is only $250,000,’ said Dr Chris Atmore, a member of the alliance organising the rally, today. Shadow Attorney General Martin Pakula and Greens MLC Colleen Hartland will address the rally. Attorney General Robert Clark has also been invited to speak. ‘The Baillieu Government has publicly expressed support for the work of the Review, but it needs to actually provide the money to the Court to ensure it continues,’ Dr Atmore said. In October, the Government released its Action Plan to address violence against women and children. ‘In launching the Plan, Premier Baillieu spoke of the family violence deaths of women like Sargun Ragi. We say that to make our system accountable for such deaths, you need to fund the evidence-based review processes that will help to prevent them in future,’ Dr Atmore concluded. The Red Rose Rally campaign has written to all State Government MPs urging their support and action. The rally will be held on the steps of State Parliament from 1.00–2.00pm on Tuesday 13 November 2012. It will be live-tweeted using the #fvdeaths hashtag. Groups supporting the rally are members of the Reference Group for the Victorian Systemic Review of Family Violence Deaths. Many are also represented on the Family Violence Statewide Advisory Committee and various statewide forums.
