There are so many varied and interesting violence against women prevention projects involved in the PiP network that the May meeting was devoted to sharing information. Network members brought along fliers and materials, stories of triumph and challenge to share with their fellow network members.

Engaging with best practice, February 2010

Our February PiP meeting was a facilitated discussion of best practice and the recently released Respectful Relationships Education in Secondary Schools report. In particular we will be looked at the 5 criteria for good practice outlined in chapter 3. The opinion post Best practice is a state of mind provided some food for thought about the limitations of best practice as a static concept.

A right to respect and Respectful relationships education in schools, December 2009

Looked at the recently released state government plan to prevent violence against women, A Right to Respect, with particular focus on the education setting. Lara Fergus from the Office of Women’s Policy gave an overview of the state plan. Then David Billimoria and Erika Turner spoke to the Department of Education and Early Childhood’s plans in response to the Respectful Relationships Education in Schools report.

Engaging with the media to prevent violence against women, September 2009

Improved participant’s capacity to engage with the media. Featuring insights from Jane Ashton (Women’s Domestic Violence Crisis Service) on the Media Advocacy Project. Followed by practical activities led by Antony Balmain, VicHealth’s Media and Public Advocacy Coordinator.

Violence against women with disabilities, June 2009

An opportunity to learn and reflect on our ability to work with young people with disabilities. The statistics show that this is a group that is particularly vulnerable to interpersonal violence. How can we extend our violence prevention practice to include people of all abilities? Speakers included Kate Hood, Victorian Women with Disabilities Network and Rebecca Feldman, Youth Disability Advocacy Service

Sexual health and violence prevention, December 2008

The connections between relationship violence prevention and sexual health education. Presentations from Shelley Walker, Knox Community Health, Youth ‘KISS’ research project  and Lucy Forwood, Women’s Health West on ‘Girls talk, Guys talk’. There was also a broad discussion of current developments within the sector at the beginning of the meeting.
