The California-based, Prevention Connection, has a ‘wiki’ with information on a range of materials (eg. workshop exercises, school curriculum, books, posters and dvds) about and for the primary prevention of violence against women visit violence prevention wiki

The UK website Womankind Worldwide has a range of resources and activities that schools can use with students to prevent violence against women

‘Preventing violence against women and girls: A Study of Educational Programmes’ This report by Jane Ellis, University of Warwick, includes a comprehensive evaluation of the schools’ work in England. Download from Womankind

VAWnet is a Pensylvanian website with long lists of articles on programs, evaluation, and research on preventing violence against women (follow the ‘prevention and education’ link under either domestic violence or sexual assault).

Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance has links to a range of resources. Of particular interest to violence prevention practitioners is their journal ‘Moving Up Stream’ which focuses on the primary prevention of sexual violence.

A Canadian consortium has compiled a review of school based violence prevention programs and produced a range of resources focused on preventing violence against women and girls.

Rape Crisis Scotland has launched a campaign, entitled This is Not an Invitation to Rape Me aimed at tackling the assumptions and judgements people make about women who are raped, by stimulating debate.

Australian resources

Women’s Health in the North and the Northern Integrated Family Violence Network have produced a short film targeting young women called ‘Love Control’. It is particularly useful for demonstrating the impact of emotional abuse and other nonphysical forms of controlling behaviour. There are two versions on Youtube, one with Victorian contact numbers and one with national contact numbers .

The Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearinghouse and the Australian Centre for the Study of Sexual Assault both have national online databases of good practice programs that respond to domestic violence and sexual assault respectively, including a large number aimed at young people both for prevention and intervention.

CASA House has produced an evaluation report on their widely acclaimed Sexual Assault Prevention Program for Secondary Schools (SAPPSS).

The Sexual Ethics website has been developed by a NSW research project investigating the exploration of sexual ethics as a tool for preventing sexual assault.

The Australian branch of Amnesty International has released a National Plan of Action to eliminate Violence Against Women which includes advice on prevention as well as responses to violence against women.

XYonline is an archive of profeminist articles by and for men on a broad range of issues including men’s use of violence against women, pornography and violence prevention.

Women’s Health West has a section of their website devoted to the prevention of violence against women with links to local prevention projects and some excellent planning tools for those initiating new violence prevention projects.

An Assault on Our Future: The impact of violence on young people and their relationships is a synthesis of national and international research on children’s and young people’s exposure to violence in their families and in their own relationships, its impact, and its prevention. The report is co-authored by Michael Flood and Lara Fergus.

The Australian White Ribbon Day foundation has produced a schools kit to help schools generate their own response to the White Ribbon Day campaign.

VicHealth resources

Preventing violence before it occurs: a framework and background paper to guide the primary prevention of violence against women in Victoria This document presents a comprehensive ecological model to guide the primary prevention of violence against women and forms the background to ‘A Right to Respect’ mentioned below.

Two steps forward, one step back: Community attitudes to violence against women is a research report on VicHealth’s Community Attitudes Survey. It makes several recommendations for effective prevention strategies. You can also now download the 2009 National Community Attitudes survey.

Respectful Relationships Education in Schools is a report produced by VicHealth in partnership with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development that identifies best practice in school-based programs that support the development of respectful relationships.

The Health Costs of Violence outlines the burden of disease study that gave rise to the famous statistic “Violence against women is the leading contributor to ill health for women between the ages of 14 and 44.”

VicHealth also has a range of other publications relating to the primary prevention of violence against women.

Engaging with best practice, February 2010

Our February PiP meeting was a facilitated discussion of best practice and the recently released Respectful Relationships Education in Secondary Schools report. In particular we will be looked at the 5 criteria for good practice outlined in chapter 3. The opinion post Best practice is a state of mind provided some food for thought about the limitations of best practice as a static concept.
