Aboriginal Family Law Services
The AFLS provides legal services for all Aboriginal people, including children, who have experienced family violence or sexual assault, including men, women and children.
This includes legal advocacy, casework, court support and representation in matters related to family violence and sexual assault. We cannot act for perpetrators of violence. The legal matters we assist with include Violence Restraining Orders (VRO’s), criminal injuries compensation, and family law such as child recovery orders and parenting plans. We also advocate on law reforms that support the wellbeing of Aboriginal victim survivors and help to prevent family violence and make our communities safer.
We provide a holistic service, understanding that violence impacts us on many levels. We will assist our clients (either directly or through referrals) with counselling to help recover from the trauma of violence and abuse. We can also help with referrals to other agencies (where that is appropriate) to help with other matters such as housing and accommodation. We will work with other agencies, including the police, to promote safety for our clients.
We believe addressing family violence is a community wide responsibility. The AFLS also undertakes community education to promote safety and the right of all members of our community to live free from violence and fear.
Our culturally secure services are delivered from six regional locations – Broome, Carnarvon, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Kununurra and Port Hedland. We advocate on law and policy reforms that support the wellbeing of Aboriginal victim survivors and help to prevent family violence and make our communities safer.
