SAMSSA is a non-government, community organisation working to eliminate sexual violence.
The Service Assisting Male Survivors of Sexual Assault was established in 1999, after a needs analysis beforehand identifed that men’s experiences of sexual assault differ from the experiences of women.
Sexual assault against males often goes unreported or even un noticed. Society doesn’t expect men to victims of this nature. Most of the clients accessing support at SAMSSA are adult survivors of child abuse, but there is still some incidence of sexual violence against adult males.
Prevalence rates are as high as 1 in 6 boys before they are adults and 1 in 20 males over the age of 15.
This innovative and pioneering service remains the only dedicated service for men who have experienced sexual assault in Australia.
